Barishal, February 14, 2025: On the occasion of Sundarban Day 2025, a human chain and a civil dialogue were held in Barishal today, February 14, Friday at 10 am in front of Ashwini Kumar Town Hall and a civil dialogue was held in the hall room of Barishal Reporters Unity. The program was jointly organized by PRANTOJON, ActionAid Bangladesh, Just Energy Transition Network Bangladesh (JETnet-BD), Barishal Divisional Environment and Public Safety Forum, and Arohi. The importance of the Sundarbans in the context of climate change, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable development was highlighted in this program.
Speakers in the human chain said that the Sundarbans is not just a forest, it is directly involved in the livelihood of millions of people in the coastal region. There is no alternative to protecting the Sundarbans to protect the country from the adverse effects of climate change.
Environmentalists, researchers, civil society representatives, journalists, and young climate activists participated in the civil dialogue. They said that the Sundarbans are under threat due to coal-based power plants, industrialization, illegal occupation, and pollution. so, they called on the policymakers to take effective steps to conserve the Sundarbans.
Tauhedul Islam Shahjada, Barishal Divisional Coordinator of (JETnet-BD) and Executive Director of Prantajon informed that Just Energy Transition Network Bangladesh (JETnet-BD) will continue its activities to raise public awareness and discuss at the policy level to protect the Sundarbans.
The local people of Barishal and environment-conscious people, youth representatives, representatives of civil society, journalists, environmental workers, and many others participated in today’s event.
